Merci Simon.

Entrance to a House – Simon Burder

Simon Burder searches in his work for a sense of place, particularly influenced by mid-20th century English landscape tradition.

He is drawn to locations that are marked by human activity – journeying, working, dwelling – and looks for contrasts of shape, light, colour and texture to establish a dynamic structure in his drawings and prints.

The pier is a location that reminds him of the mass migrations of today. He uses lithography to create a connection between the natural rock contrasted with the angular concrete pier.  The triptych format and shifting horizon allude to frames of a movie, emphasising a sense of movement and being in a boat.

A graduate in Fine Art from Exeter College of Art, Burder was awarded a French Government Scholarship to study lithography at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1980 and the Birgit Skiold Prize at the National Print Exhibition, London, in 2002.

North Berwick Old Pier – Simon Burder
