In my country, at the end of the 13th century, a ‘Mother and Child’ was painted on a wooden panel, probably an altarpiece. Over the centuries, this work disappeared several times and was considerably destroyed. More recently, about fifty years ago, the upper part of the panel (the head) was stolen only to be found a few weeks later by carabinieri in a tower. I understand that it is now kept in a country church lost in the middle of the fields and closed to the public. It is said that it was a miraculous image protecting the country, the people and the crops from drought. I have never seen this painting in real life, only heard stories and seen photos; all of this inspired me to make this linocut.

Dans mon pays, à la fin du XIIIe siècle, une « Mère à l’Enfant » a été peinte sur un panneau de bois, probablement un retable. Au fil des siècles, cette œuvre a disparu à plusieurs reprises et a été considérablement détruite. Plus récemment, il y a une cinquantaine d’années, la partie supérieure du panneau (la tête) a été volée pour être retrouvée quelques semaines plus tard par des carabiniers dans une tour. J’ai cru comprendre qu’elle est maintenant conservée dans une église de campagne perdue au milieu des champs et fermée au public. On raconte que c’était une image miraculeuse protégeant le pays, le peuple et les cultures de la sécheresse. Je n’ai jamais vu cette peinture en vrai, seulement entendu des histoires et vu des photos; tout cela ma inspiré pour réaliser cette linogravure.
