The uncertainty about the future made me hesitate to try. ‘Venture Out’ is a work I created to encourage myself and others to try and pursue our dreams fearlessly.

/ Artist interview by Émilie Aizier, alias Émilion the inventor of Kitchen Litho and competition organizer.

Your print is evocative of this curiosity and this need for freedom which pushes us to come out of our cocoons… This little girl who is about to come out of her hiding place is really touching. The finesse of your drawing contributes to this remarkable atmosphere, full of sensitivity. I think that Kitchen Litho is a very good exercise to improve his drawing quickly. I’m sure you noticed it! What can it also bring to illustrators?

Yi-Tung Lin – Oui ! / Yes! In the process of Kitchen Litho, a lot of redrawing is required. In the end, my hand has become very stable when drawing. I am a student at National Kaohsiung Normal University (TAÏWAN), majored in Industrial Design and minored in Fine Art. Personal artistic approach: illustrations and printmaking. Kitchen Lithography has endless possibilities of colors and styles, it can be a creative practice for illustrators to experiment color mixing and layouts.

You win the first Kitchen Litho prize, mention ‘Illustration’ and moreover with congratulations from the jury in all categories combined! What do you think and how do you feel about this?

When I heard the news, I was so excited and overwhelmed. I am very grateful to my teacher and friends who work alongside me. Without their help and encouragement, I would not have won such an award. Also thank you Émilie for hosting this competition, which allowed me to see outstanding works of Kitchen Litho from all over the world. It is a wonderful experience!

Émilie : Depuis quand dessines-tu? Que t’apportes cette pratique du dessin? / Since when do you draw? What does this practice of drawing bring to you?

I’ve been drawing ever since little, I enjoy turning imaginations into art pieces, and Kitchen Litho helps me become bolder in creating, because with every layer, the colors become more alive and vibrant than before. That’s why I love this technique very much.

(films, livres …). / For my part, I see a fascinating thing in your print: the graphic effects of alugraphy mixed with a modern manga style illustration. It’s like an almost a vintage effect. This high quality print on paper serves to delight the emotion of the image. You are maybe too young to know these works but, in looking at your print, we can think about Benjamin Rabier‘s illustrations printed at the time with chromolithography. Of course, we think clearly about mangas with the drawing of the girl, please can you tell us your reference artists, the ones you like most? (films, books…).

I am greatly interested in magical world-build and unique characters such as films from the Japanese animation studio Studio Ghibli and heart-warming picture books from Taiwanese illustrator Jimmy Liao, I also take inspirations from great artists such as Heikala and Maruti Bitamin.
