Focus on the prints received to date for the Kitchen Print Biennale!

Dear friends of printmaking, I have the pleasure to present to you a great diversity of images from different art printing techniques by artists with varied profiles (some are just starting out, others are seasoned). You will be able to discover the linocuts full of material effects by Lætitia Montinoni and Carla de Vries, a beautiful tribute to Leonardo da Vinci carried out in etching & aquatint by Sandro Chinelatto or even a black way all in magic by Cleo Wilkinson. And of course, you can find the Kitchen colored lithographs by Sarah Glogau and Lionel Bras below!

Carla de Vries ‘Highland Cow’, 21 x 29 cm, linocut, edition 2/14. Netherlands

I find my inspiration in everyday life and its surroundings. Most of my works are figurative. I love the attitude of this Highland cow.

Lætitia Montironi ‘Blowing’, linocut, 29 x 21 cm, edition 4/5. France

My work is often inspired by Asian culture, more precisely China and Japan. I wanted to give a visual identity of this wind coming from the four cardinal directions through the blowing kimono.

Sandro Chinelatto ‘L’Uomo Vitruviano – Ex inventions’ , etching and aquatint, 28 x 21 cm, edition 5/30. Italy

In this engraving, I celebrate the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death (1452-1519) with a composition that brings together some of his famous and very important works. I wanted to emphasize his drawing of the old man by placing him in the foreground, because in my opinion it is one of the simple but significant figures of Leonardo’s great expressive capacity. Five hundred years have passed and yet this artist, inventor and symbol of the Renaissance, continues to fascinate and disorient us.

Cleo Wilkinson ‘Inception V’, 28 x 21 cm, mezzotint, edition 13/40. Australia

I try to emphasize the singularity silence and loneliness of a form. The mezzotint print technique remains unchanged for the last 300 years and nursing an image out of its black womb into light has a primordial spiritual magic power. What is missing in the shadows and is suggested provides the greatest potential.

NDLR
Sarah Glogau ‘Too short’, 29,7 x 21 cm, Kitchen Litho on alu foil (black)+ transfer (green) + linocut (red), Edition 2/5. Germany

‘Too short’ is one of my images printed at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic during lock down. Without artistic studies, I just like to print what goes through my mind in different techniques. I find it frustrating that people still can’t cough into their elbow and I tried to make a humorous approach to that.

*The crook of your elbow when you sneeze or cough!

As the inventor of the Kitchen litho, I allow myself to dwell for a moment on this technique which remains very new in its practice and which deserves special encouragement. First of all, congratulations to Sarah Glogau who is starting out in Kitchen Litho and who, at my request, was willing to restart her image several times in order to improve it from a technical point of view. I immediately liked his composition and his idea of drawing. Thanks to her perseverance, she is in a position to learn. According to his messages and the result, my remote support will have given him a more positive vision of his work and the possibility of overcoming technical problems. Because retrying is the basis of learning a technique. Whether in engraving or lithography in my opinion …

In her image, Sarah Glogau is a fun reminder that unlike this dinosaur, most of us are able to sneeze into our elbows! ;-). I also warmly welcome the chromo-Kitchen-lithographic (! :-)) work of Lionel Bras with its beautiful atmosphere of the Breton sunset.

France

At nightfall, it is as an autodidact that I occupy my hands printing engravings to calm my storms and to fix my dreams on paper.  I present here a landscape bringing together the three main Breton characters that surround me on a daily basis: the seaside, the alignments of megaliths and the moor in the bright colors of spring. K-Litho (on alu foil) allows me to produce synthetic images, unlike my etchings which are detailed and rather narrative.
